THANKSGIVING…Anyone who knows me, knows well that Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday—we can so openly thank God for everything in our lives without upsetting those folks who get so up tight about Easter and Christmas. Well this year I want to share with you an e-mail I recently received. A perfect Thanksgiving experience. Years ago Don and I were flying back from Haiti and got into a conversation with a young man who was on the mission of information gathering. He was so interested in doing his best to help Haiti that we were eager to share any information we felt would help him toward that goal. Rob and FHL have been working together on getting food shipped to Haiti—splitting container expenses and then the food in Haiti. This is Rob Hess’ “other side of this story”… “Eva, I don’t think I ever told you this story, about the night before I got on the plane and met you. Through the week in Haiti God had shown us everything we needed to run our school feeding program. What we needed and all the steps and costs, except the fine details of how to get the food and where, plus many more fine details that only someone who had years of experience could give. I asked God to help me learn all the fine details, all the specifics. I shared my concerns with a group of 4 other men that night and we prayed for that info to be provided somehow, and soon. Then because of 1 less seat on the plane I met you and your husband. The 4 other men were amazed when I got off the plane and told them we had all the rest of the details, everything. Plus I had an in-flight meal when you shared your bologna sandwiches. All that info and I got to fly first class! God always does provide, and then he gives us more than we ask for. I thought that meeting was just an answer to my questions, but He provided you and I with support and a friendship we would both need to get through many struggles. Isn’t God amazing! Rob H,
Experiences like these are so rewarding, they are a major factor in keeping us going for 40 years… Smiles of patients healed from burns, smiles on hungry faces picking up a week’s supply of food… smiles from God.
TEAMWORKI truly believe that God is also smiling as those of us working to help Haiti are teaming up to make our efforts double in impact. Organizations donating, like FMSC, KAH, Hearts for the Hungry, and the big guys like MAP International, Abbott Pharmaceuticals and Blessings making it possible for us to get needs at a lesser price. Our contributors who month after month entrust us with their offerings. I thank God for the blessing of FHL and always for the privilege of serving and the honor of continuing the legacy that meant so much to Don.
More TEAMWORKThe road that comes from the city up to the headquarters and Beck Hotel property is horrible and getting worse if that is possible. Since there is no help from any branch of the Haitian government, the people of the area have decided to “fix it.” Présumé said they are asking everyone in the area to help. We delivered a truck of gravel and sand —a “new truck” good deed.
CLINICThe clinic continues to be an outreach blessing to so many hurting people, thank you for your support that makes it possible for us to keep it staffed and supplied.
CHRISTMAS CARGONo “last minute” Christmas cargo if we can avoid it this year. That means that we are requesting everything here as soon as possible with nothing after November 20th for Christmas 2009. Logistics always becomes a bigger problem for Christmas because of the increased cargo going in to Haiti. Anything arriving late won’t go to waste, it just won’t necessarily make the party… but it will always be appreciated. You make the Christmas for the children in Haiti—thank you. You supply the $$ to fly it down. As you count your blessings this Thanksgiving we ask that you make little comparisons to help put your blessings into perspective: Thank you Lord that we live in a land of relative peace, not seeing white UN trucks cruising our streets with guns readied like in Haiti. Thank you for the freedom to worship You, so many countries are persecuting the faithful. We thank you Lord for our homes (or shelters), our jobs (or public assistance) and our food whether at home or from a food kitchen, it is Your provisions. Now… please continue on with your list.
NEEDSWhat do we need for For Haiti with Love. Money is always at the top of the list because we do not have donation sources (better than retail prices, but not free) for the following vital items: Food Bags for the food program33 gal trash bags for the clinic Tongue Depressors to spread burn cream Clinic gloves—medium 4” rolled conforming gauze bandages 4” x 4” x 8 Ply gauze pads 2” x 10’ Durapore Tape Vaseline Petroleum Jelly Alcohol Peroxide Betadine Odo-ban disinfectant/cleaner for clinic & H.Q.
This sample list averages $800 a month in purchases. That does not include $16+ per jar of burn cream… around 6 a day for heavy days. There are some items we are always short on for Christmas. They include things especially for boys and young men. Toiletries are good—nothing with aerosol, they won’t let us ship those by air. Even girls smell-goods must be sprays not aerosol containers. We ordered soccer balls that have not been inflated so we still need a good air compressor to pump up over 100 soccer balls on Christmas morning. Could use a major supply of needles and air pumps to hand out with the soccer balls.
We have lots of dolls, dresses, shorts, hair things, etc. for the girls… but boys always come up a little short on gift items.
Big ticket needsWe have a couple of $10,000 cargo bill coming up for donated containers of food… this is $5,000 less than it used to be. The 3rd one is already paid for. Another $8,000 would buy and ship our half of a container of black bean splits to go with these donated food packs. Our donor for the beans went to be with the Lord this Spring. He used to personally pay for two shipments a year.
These look unreachable, but put into $100 donation terms, that’s 100 contributors to deliver 38 pallets of nutritionally balanced food at our headquarters door in Cap Haitien…. Or 200 at $50.
Please pause this holiday and take the time to count your blessing. God Bless and, Happy Thanksgiving
