August 2009 Newsletter
Merry Christmas! Christmas in August that is! We are heads down in final preparations for the Christmas in August fund-raiser, which is just around the corner on August 10. So if you haven't reserved your spot yet, you better get cracking! We are enclosing the reservation form again this month, so sign up and get it in the mail! Since time is getting short, you can also sign up online, then mail your check, use PayPal, or pay at the door. It has been a $25 donation from day one and is the same this year. Remember that Bob Macomber, author extraordinaire, will again be joining us; bringing his newly released book. For those who are collecting the Peter Wake series, here is your chance to get the newest adventure in the series, and have it autographed by the author! And as if that wasn't enough, Présumé just got in with Roseline (7/16), and they will be there as well. Présumé should be all healed from the cataract surgery (7/20) by then, so will have his full vision back. Gifts for under the tree should be new, not wrapped, and with no English skills required. If there are batteries needed, please include them. We need a special emphasis on little boys (but not guns or toys of violence), boys and young men hygiene items, new clothing… for some reason since girls are so much easier (and more fun) to buy for we always seem to come up short for boys and young men. And just like every year, there will be fun and surprises for everyone, with lots of door prizes. So if you need a new door, come on out! (Sorry, couldn't resist). Heather is really excited and is going to be about adding new and exciting things for the auction. Ed Manny will once again fill the hall with Christmas music, Marc Delphonse adds good food and you bring lots of new toys for under the tree for the children of Haiti as well as cargo $$ to get it down in time for Christmas Day. We are praying for a great turnout, so you do your part and come! Where: First Presbyterian Church

As Eva mentioned in the last letter, Clint and Kristy Erickson in Canada heard about FHL on Mission Network News and our drive to raise money for a new truck. They had been praying about helping God’s work with proceeds from the house they were selling; God led them to us. We want to sincerely thank them for being obedient to His word and donating the balance of the funds we need to purchase the truck. The funds aren’t wired to Haiti yet (a bank hold we were told would not happen), but will be soon and we will include pictures of the truck when we get it purchased. The way God works to meet our needs and provide for His people Is truly wonderful, amazing, and awe inspiring.
Clinic Update Here are the numbers of people that the clinic has treated this year, with comparisons to 2008 and 2007. You can see the dramatic increase in the number of people who are coming to get treated:
The picture below is of the three surviving children of a birth of quadruplets. Jeff, #1, was natural birth and the other three were C-section. They were born to a family who already had five children and no income or work. They had gone from charity to charity out in the countryside and in Cap Haitien but everyone had turned them away or said "come back tomorrow", then said the same thing again the next day. We opened our gifts from God to share with this little family. With the new supply of formula just delivered from Abbott and released finally from the wharf (thanks God), layettes from the Lutheran Church of the Palms, clothing donations from various sources, and beans and food packs, plus $200, we started this little family on their new life. Presume and another policeman are working with another charity in hopes of getting this little homeless family into one of the homes being build by that organization - please keep this in your prayers.
Cargo Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah, as of Friday, July 3rd we got the last of the three containers off the wharf and the food at the headquarters! Remember those beans from way back in October? Well we are trying to make fast distribution of them because the report is that some of them aren’t smelling very good; but as we mentioned above, the formula was just in time for those adorable 6 week old babies and still has plenty of good date. Pilgrim House #19 Presume has already started on the Pilgrim House #19 because he knew we had the funds in the bank. He was scolded for dumping a load of sand in front of the house. It had been so long since he took the photos that the woman didn't connect what was going on with improving her home. Those who know Presume know that he can't let an opportunity like that go to waste, so he had a little fun and waited until she was gone to start on the latrine. She was very pleased, and very apologetic, when she got home and realized what was going on. Here are some pictures. FHL is 40 years old this year!!! Yes, I am going to remind you of that every month! We have a 40 year legacy of serving those in Haiti and I think it is something wonderful to celebrate and praise God for His support and guidance in serving the people of Haiti. I do want to encourage you again to help us continue for another 40 years by continuing to give generously. If you have the desire, means and ability, maybe include a little 40th anniversary gift! Blessings! Well, I have been busy for the past 2 months and not able to be as active a part of FHL as I would like. Things are getting better and I hope to be able to talk with you all in the coming months. I do enjoy writing the newsletter, as much as I hope you enjoy reading it (and I think Eva likes editing it more than writing it!). I pray that the Lord keep you and yours safe as this summer begins to wind down to a close, at least in terms of the kids heading back to school. We will still have a lot more heat down here. I want to thank each of you for your support of FHL. If you have ideas on what you would like to see in future newsletters or updates that we are missing and interest you, please send us a note. We keep all of you in our prayers and ask for you to do the same for us. God Bless, Rob
