Cap Haitien

It would be wonderful to tell you this is one of the poor sections of Cap Haitien, but this is Cap Haitien. No sewer system all rain, garbage and waste materials take the same path to the ocean.

There are meters for electric, but there is seldom electricity now. One of the "professions" in Haiti is stealing power by splicing into the wires of the power company. So many do it, it is apparently impossible to monitor -- or it is one of the ways for the electric department employees to make a little extra money -- "dash."

This particular photo also gives you a good idea of the 'zoning' in Haiti. Your lot may be small on the ground, but it is as tall and as wide from the second story up as you have the money to build. It is first come, first serve on air space.
